Anna Maria Island Restaurants and Local Food

Food is a big part of any travel experience, and Anna Maria Island delivers with a variety of beachside restaurants and neighborhood favorites. We discovered several standout spots during our weekend. On Saturday we lunched at the Sand Bar, located right on the beach. The setting is hard to beat—ocean views, a casual breezy atmosphere and attentive service. The stone crab appetizers were exceptional and made for a memorable start to the meal. Weekends are busy so expect a wait for a table; it’s worth grabbing a drink and watching the waves while you wait.

For a quieter dinner with a marina view, we enjoyed an evening at The Chateau at Waterline Villas and Marina. The ambiance is relaxed and the menu offered a few refined options; highlights for our group included mussels as an appetizer and a mushroom ravioli entrée that was rich and satisfying.

One of our best finds was The Ugly Grouper. Don’t be misled by the unassuming exterior—this lively spot serves outstanding seafood and has a fun local vibe. Our group loved the Island Grouper Kabobs, Avocado Caprese salad and the grouper tacos. The signature cheese fan shells and a bright mango sauce elevated the tacos and made the meal truly memorable. If you’re seeking local flavor and generous portions, this is a must-try.

How to Get There

Anna Maria Island is easy to reach by air and car. The nearest major airports are Tampa International Airport (TPA) and Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport (SRQ). From either airport you can rent a car and drive to the island—driving is convenient and gives you flexibility for exploring nearby towns. The island itself is accessible by car, and many visitors find parking straightforward if you plan ahead. There is also a free island trolley that helps with short hop trips along the island and reduces the need to hunt for parking spots. The closest larger city is Sarasota, reachable in about a 40-minute drive depending on traffic.

Where We Stayed

Anna Maria Island keeps a low-rise, coastal feel—no high-rise developments here—so lodging options include charming small hotels, cottages and private rentals. We stayed in an Airbnb just across the street from the beach, which provided easy access to coastal walks and nearby restaurants. Choosing a rental near the shoreline makes it simple to soak up early morning sunrises or end the day with a sunset stroll.

What to Do on Anna Maria Island

There’s plenty to fill a long weekend. Spend time on the island’s beaches, wander through beachside shops and visit the Anna Maria City Pier where sightings of manatees and dolphins are common. If you’re looking for a memorable outing, book a sunset cruise with a local dolphin tour operator. We took a pontoon-style sunset cruise that was family-friendly and offered comfortable seating with unobstructed views. The captain shared local history and naturalist insights, and we were fortunate to see several dolphins play near the boat. Music and light sing-alongs on board added to the festive atmosphere.

For a final island meal, we enjoyed brunch at The Sage Biscuit on Cortez Road. Their menu includes classic comfort options and accommodates gluten-free needs, which can be helpful for travelers with dietary restrictions.

Our weekend on Anna Maria Island was short but full of great food, beach time and quality moments with friends. Whether you’re planning a girls’ getaway, a family beach trip, or a quiet coastal escape, the island’s relaxed pace, seafood restaurants and natural beauty make it a rewarding Florida destination. Take your time, savor the sunsets and enjoy the small moments—this island is the perfect place to recharge.
