I often start the day with a large green smoothie, and this recipe—adapted from a favorite superfood smoothie collection—quickly became one of my top choices. The combination of frozen banana and mango makes the texture wonderfully thick and smooth, while baby spinach blends in invisibly, adding vitamins and a bright color without altering the sweet, tropical flavor.

One ingredient that elevates this smoothie is raw, shelled hemp seeds. I was curious about hemp seeds because I wanted a way to add protein to smoothies without using yogurt. After trying them, I found they have a mild, slightly nutty taste reminiscent of raw sunflower seeds and they blend into a creamy consistency. Many people use hemp seeds as a plant-based protein boost and a source of healthy fats and amino acids. If you don’t have hemp seeds, you can substitute other seeds such as sunflower seeds or ground flaxseed—although the nutrition and flavor will vary slightly.

Where to find hemp seeds: most health-food stores carry raw, shelled hemp seeds. They’re often available in larger supermarkets (look in the organic or health-food aisle), at warehouse stores, or through reputable online retailers. When purchasing, choose unsalted, shelled hemp seeds (sometimes labeled “hemp hearts”).

To make this smoothie thick and milkshake-like, freeze your banana ahead of time. Using frozen banana instead of ice helps retain flavor while keeping the texture rich. For added sweetness, use a small amount of liquid sweetener such as stevia, agave, or maple syrup to taste, but the ripe mango usually provides enough natural sweetness for many people.

This smoothie is dairy-free, vegetarian, gluten-free, and fits well into a clean-eating or Paleo-style approach if you choose compliant ingredients. The original recipe notes it’s suitable for Weight Watchers, with the author indicating a Points value for the 16 oz serving size.

Yield: 2 servings (approximately 16 oz each)

Prep Time: 10 mins | Total Time: 10 mins

Ingredients

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 packed cup baby spinach
  • 2/3 cup fresh mango, diced
  • 2 tablespoons raw, shelled hemp seeds (hemp hearts)
  • 1 3/4 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 cup ice
  • Sweetener to taste (optional; a few drops of liquid stevia or a small amount of maple syrup)

Instructions

  1. Place the frozen banana, baby spinach, diced mango, hemp seeds, almond milk and ice into a blender.
  2. Blend on high until the mixture is completely smooth and creamy. If needed, stop and scrape down the sides, then blend again.
  3. Taste and add sweetener if desired, blending briefly to combine.
  4. Divide into two glasses (about 16 oz each) and serve immediately.

Notes

To achieve a thicker, more milkshake-like texture, be sure the banana is fully frozen. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add a little more almond milk. For more protein, add an extra tablespoon of hemp seeds or include a scoop of your preferred protein powder.
