Family Getaway: Our Stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
I just returned from a wonderful family trip to Walt Disney World. It was a welcome escape from the New York cold and a chance for our family to relax, explore, and enjoy memorable time together. We traveled on short notice so we could squeeze the getaway in before my older daughter returned to school, and I couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out.

Why We Chose Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge
This was our first stay at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and the hotel exceeded our expectations. The African-inspired design surrounds you from the moment you arrive: textured thatch-like ceilings, warm natural materials, and authentic décor that evoke the feeling of being on another continent. The lobby even features live African drumming, which added a lively, immersive soundtrack to our arrival.

One of the most magical parts of our room was the view. From our balcony we looked out over the Arusha Savanna and watched animals roam the grounds—an experience that made our stay feel unique and special. It’s the kind of view that children remember for years.

Pools, Weather, and Family Time
The weather hovered around 70°F, which was perfect for exploring the resort and parks. I didn’t take full advantage of the resort’s large heated pool, but my older daughter Karina tested the water and approved. The pool area felt spacious and family-friendly, with room for both adults who want to relax and kids who want to splash around.

Dining: Flavors of Africa and Kid-Friendly Options
The dining options at the lodge highlight African flavors and ingredients while also offering choices that appeal to children. One standout was Boma, a buffet-style restaurant that features a variety of African dishes alongside familiar American favorites for younger diners. The balance of adventurous flavors and comforting options made meals enjoyable for everyone in our group.

Benefits of Staying Onsite at a Disney Hotel
Before this trip, I hadn’t stayed at a Disney hotel. After experiencing the convenience and extras firsthand, I can see why many visitors prefer onsite accommodations. One major perk is Extra Magic Hours, which allow resort guests to enter certain theme parks earlier or stay later than the general public. Those extended hours can make a big difference for families trying to fit in favorite rides with less wait time.
During our stay, the hotel also offered complimentary airport transportation through Disney’s Magical Express, which meant we could head straight to the park after landing without worrying about baggage logistics. For many families, that kind of convenience removes a lot of travel stress and can be a meaningful time and cost saver compared with taxis or rideshares.
In addition, Disney’s free internal transportation system—buses, monorails, and boats—means you don’t have to rent a car to get around. That simplicity was a major relief and made travel between our hotel and the parks straightforward and predictable.

Activities for Kids
The resort is clearly designed with families in mind. There were outdoor movie nights, face painting, arts and crafts, campfires, a Hakuna Matata-themed playground that my younger daughter Madison adored, an arcade, and even safari-themed activities. We didn’t manage to try every activity on offer, which gives us a great reason to return and explore another Disney resort in the future.

Final Thoughts
Staying at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge turned a short family trip into a memorable mini-vacation. Between the immersive atmosphere, animal-view balconies, family-oriented dining, and a long list of activities for kids, this resort delivered everything we hoped for and more. If you’re planning a family trip to Disney World, consider staying onsite—especially at a resort like Animal Kingdom Lodge that offers a distinctive theme and plenty of conveniences geared toward families.
