Avocado Fries with Lime Dipping Sauce

These avocado fries make a healthy appetizer or snack that’s easy to scale down if you’re cooking for one. Instead of deep-frying, coating the avocado wedges in panko and cooking them in an air fryer or oven produces a crisp exterior and a creamy, warm interior without excess oil. The tangy lime dipping sauce complements the mild avocado flavor and balances the crunchy coating—don’t skip it.

For seasoning, a chili-lime blend such as Tajín (ground chile peppers, salt and dehydrated lime) gives a bright, mildly tangy finish that’s great on avocados and many other foods. If you don’t have that on hand, use a pinch of chili powder and a little extra lime juice to achieve a similar flavor profile.

Yield: 4 servings

Serving Size: 4 fries, 2 tbsp sauce

Calories: 197 kcal per serving

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces — 2 small avocados, peeled, pitted and cut into 16 wedges
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 3/4 cup panko breadcrumbs (gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons lime-chili seasoning salt (or substitute chili powder + salt with extra lime)

For the lime dipping sauce

  • 1/4 cup 0% Greek yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons light mayonnaise
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon lime-chili seasoning salt (or a pinch of chili powder + lime zest)
  • 1/8 teaspoon kosher salt (adjust to taste)

Instructions

Air Fryer Directions

  1. Preheat the air fryer to 390°F (about 200°C).
  2. Place the beaten egg in a shallow bowl. On another plate, combine the panko breadcrumbs with 1 teaspoon of the lime-chili seasoning.
  3. Lightly season the avocado wedges with 1/4 teaspoon of the lime-chili seasoning. Dip each wedge first into the beaten egg, then press into the panko mixture to coat evenly.
  4. Lightly spray both sides of each coated wedge with olive oil or cooking spray. Arrange the wedges in a single layer in the air fryer basket without overcrowding. Cook 7–8 minutes, turning once halfway through, until golden and crisp. Serve immediately with the lime dipping sauce.

Oven Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Follow the coating steps above.
  2. Place wedges on a parchment-lined baking sheet and lightly spray with oil. Bake 10–15 minutes, turning once, until the exterior is golden and crisp. Watch closely near the end to avoid overcooking the avocado.

Make the Lime Dipping Sauce

Whisk together the Greek yogurt, light mayonnaise, fresh lime juice, 1/2 teaspoon lime-chili seasoning (or substitute), and kosher salt. Taste and adjust seasoning or lime to preference. Chill briefly if you like a cooler sauce.

Tips and Notes

  • Choose ripe but firm avocados so the wedges hold their shape during breading and cooking.
  • If you don’t have a lime-chili seasoning, use a mix of chili powder, a pinch of salt and a little lime zest for brightness.
  • These are best served hot and crisp. The avocado interior will be soft, so handle gently when turning.
  • To make this gluten-free, use certified gluten-free panko or crushed rice crackers.
  • Make the dipping sauce ahead and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Coated avocado fries are best eaten immediately; if you must store leftovers, keep the sauce separate and consume the fries within one day for best texture.

Variations

Try adding herbs or spices to the panko mixture—smoked paprika, garlic powder, or grated Parmesan can add extra flavor. For a vegan option, replace the egg wash with a flax or aquafaba slurry and use vegan mayonnaise for the sauce.
