How I Avoided Weight Gain on a 10-Day Cruise: Practical Healthy Cruise Tips
My family and I recently returned from a 10-day cruise aboard the new Carnival Vista, sailing from Barcelona to Athens. It was an amazing way to experience Mediterranean food and culture, and unlike past vacations where I gained weight, this time I actually lost a pound. I didn’t restrict myself from enjoying local specialties—mozzarella, gelato and pizza in Italy, wine and macarons in France, spinach pie in Greece—yet I managed to stay balanced. Here are the strategies I used to avoid the typical cruise weight gain while still enjoying great meals and fun.

1. Balance is key
Cruises can be full of tempting options—buffets, cocktails and desserts—but they also offer many healthy choices. Focus on portion control and mix indulgences with nutrient-dense meals. Dining rooms often serve more moderate portions and may offer lighter dessert options. Sharing desserts is an easy way to enjoy a taste without overdoing it. At the buffet, choose salads, vegetables, lean proteins, soups and whole grains. Eat slowly and savor the experience; you’ll feel satisfied sooner and be less tempted to return for seconds.
2. Pick items from the spa or lighter menus
Many ships feature a spa or healthy menu with fresh salads, whole grains and nutrient-rich toppings. On the Vista, the Serenity Salad Bar offered a range of lettuces, herbs, quinoa, chia and plenty of vegetables—simple, filling and satisfying. Choosing those options for lunch instead of a burger and fries helps you stay on track.
3. Eat fresh, local seafood

Seafood is often a lighter, protein-rich choice. Take advantage of fresh fish and shellfish both ashore and on board. In ports like Rhodes and Crete I enjoyed grilled octopus and calamari, and on the ship the dining room and specialty venues offered the catch of the day. Grilled fish like branzino is flavorful, filling and generally lower in calories than heavy, fried dishes.
4. Skip unlimited drink packages and sugary cocktails
Cocktails can be surprisingly high in calories due to sugars, juices and creams. Buying an all-you-can-drink package often encourages extra drinks you might not otherwise order. Instead, choose a glass of wine with dinner or treat a rich cocktail as an occasional dessert. If you crave a fizzy, refreshing drink, opt for seltzer with fresh lemon to avoid the sugar in sodas and mixed drinks.
5. Pack sneakers and use the gym

Enjoying a dessert or cocktail now and then is fine, but balance it with activity. Ship fitness centers let you work out with ocean views—use them. Even short, regular workouts help offset extra calories from meals and drinks.
6. Use the outdoor track

Most ships have a promenade or jogging track on the outside deck. It’s a pleasant way to walk or run while enjoying changing sea views. On the Carnival Vista, I noted that about seven laps equaled a mile—an easy metric to track if you want a quick daily goal.
7. Take the stairs
Skip the elevator when you can. Moving between decks for the pool, shows, dining rooms and activities adds up; stairs are a simple way to burn extra calories without dedicating time to a formal workout.
8. Track your steps and set goals

Use a pedometer, fitness tracker or phone app to set a daily step goal. Excursions and exploring ports on foot add meaningful activity—especially in walkable cities—so take advantage of those opportunities to boost your step count.
9. Stay active while having fun

Many ships offer active entertainment—ping pong, ropes courses, pools, sky rides, basketball, mini golf and more. These activities make it easy to burn calories while having a great time. Try new activities with family or friends to stay moving and enjoy the cruise experience.
I hope these tips help you maintain balance on your next cruise. Have you sailed recently? What strategies do you use to enjoy vacation food while keeping your waistline in check?
