How to Clean Windows

Keeping your windows clean and streak-free makes both the inside and outside of your home look better. Cleaning off dust, dirt, and pollen lets more light come in. However, cleaning windows the wrong way or using the wrong materials can leave them looking worse than if you let them get dirty. We’ll show you the best way to clean both the inside and outside of your windows to keep them shining.

When to Clean Windows

The frequency of cleaning your windows depends on various factors such as your environment, the weather, and your personal preferences. It’s recommended to clean the exterior of your windows at least twice a year, often during spring and fall, to remove accumulated dirt and grime from changing weather conditions. In areas with extreme weather or high pollution, you might need to clean your windows as often as once a month to keep them clear of pollutants and debris. The interior of your windows should generally be cleaned every two weeks to keep them looking clean and clear.

Needed Supplies

Make sure you have the following items ready for cleaning your windows:

  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Optional dish soap
  • Microfiber cloths
  • Squeegee
  • Vacuum with a brush attachment
  • Toothbrush

How to Clean Windows

Clean your windows when it’s cool, such as in the morning or on a cloudy day, says Craig Thomas, virtual handyperson expert for Frontdoor. Avoid doing this chore on a day with bright sun, as the heat can cause the cleaning fluid to dry, which will result in streaks or water spots.

Cleaning the Interior

To clean the interior of your windows, use a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water.

  1. Mix equal parts white vinegar and water in a bucket or a spray bottle. Optionally, add a few drops of dish soap to help cut through grease and grime.
  2. Wipe the window surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any dust or dirt.
  3. Soak another clean microfiber cloth in the cleaning solution and wipe the entire window surface using an ‘S’ pattern from left to right.
  4. Begin at the top of the window with a squeegee and pull it downwards in a straight line. Continue this until you have covered the whole window.
  5. Dry the edges and corners of the window with a clean cloth to eliminate any leftover moisture.
  6. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean the windowsill from dirt.
  7. Moisten a microfiber cloth in the vinegar-water solution and wipe down the windowsill.
  8. For tough stains, scrub with a toothbrush.
  9. Finish by wiping the area with a clean microfiber cloth.
  10. Step back and check the window for any streaks or spots. If any are visible, buff them out using a clean, dry cloth.

Cleaning the Exterior

If your windows are on an upper floor, ensure you use a stable, safe ladder or consider an extension pole for hard-to-reach areas.

  1. Begin by using a soft brush or a sponge to remove any dirt or cobwebs from the window surfaces.
  2. Prepare a cleaning solution by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water in a bucket. Add a few drops of dish soap to help cut through grease and grime.
  3. Wet the window thoroughly using a hose with a sprayer attachment.
  4. Dip your cloth or sponge into the vinegar and water solution and scrub the window surface, focusing on any areas with built-up grime.
  5. Attach a squeegee to an extension pole, start at an upper corner of the pane, and pull the squeegee down in a straight stroke. After each stroke, wipe the rubber edge of the squeegee with a sponge or lint-free cloth, then return to the top and repeat, slightly overlapping the first stroke.
  6. Dry the edges and corners of the window using a clean cloth.
  7. Step back and check the window for any streaks or spots. If you spot any, buff them out with a clean, dry cloth.

Cleaning the Window Tracks

When deep cleaning your windows, make sure not to overlook the window tracks.

  1. Start by using a vacuum with the brush attachment to remove any dirt, dust, and debris from the window tracks.
  2. Mix white vinegar and water in a small bowl.
  3. Use an old toothbrush to apply the vinegar solution to the tracks. Let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes to break down grime.
  4. Scrub the tracks thoroughly with the toothbrush to remove all the buildup.
  5. Wipe away the cleaning solution using a microfiber cloth dampened with clean water.
  6. Finally, dry the tracks completely with a clean microfiber cloth.

How to Maintain Windows

Maintain your windows regularly to keep them free from dust, dirt, pollen, and other debris.

  1. Trim landscaping around windows to reduce dirt and pollen accumulation.
  2. Change HVAC filters frequently to minimize indoor dust.
  3. Regularly clean curtains and drapes, and vacuum around windows to remove dust.
  4. Dust windowsills and frames in between deep cleanings.
  5. Keep windows closed as much as possible to reduce pollen buildup.
  6. Avoid using materials like paper towels that leave lint on glass when wiping.
