How to Clean a Vacuum Cleaner

If someone asked you when you last used your vacuum for cleaning at home, you might remember roughly when it was. But do you remember the last time you actually cleaned the vacuum?

We often forget that cleaning tools need care too. But keeping your cleaning devices clean can make them last longer and clean better.

Cleaning Your Vacuum

Your bagless vacuum needs enough airflow to function properly. This means it’s important to keep the canisters and filters clean. For regular upkeep, make sure to empty the vacuum’s canister when it’s half full. Also, regularly clean your vacuum following these instructions.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Microfiber cloths
  • Dishwashing liquid
  • Scissors
  • Grout brush

Steps to Cleaning a Vacuum:

Canister Cleaning Instructions:

  • Unplug the vacuum cleaner and take out the canister.
  • Use a dry microfiber cloth to wipe the inside of the canister.
  • Clean the canister in the sink using warm, soapy water.
  • Rinse thoroughly to remove all soap suds.
  • Allow the canister to dry completely before putting it back in.

Filter Cleaning Instructions:

  • Start by checking your vacuum’s manual to see if the filter is washable or needs replacing.
  • If washable, remove the filter and tap it against a hard surface over a trash can to knock out any dust.
  • Rinse the filter under warm water at the sink. Avoid using soap or cleaners unless the manufacturer’s instructions specifically allow it.
  • Let the filter dry overnight. Ensure it is completely dry before putting it back in.

Base Plate Cleaning Instructions:

  • Start by removing the base plate to access the beater bar.
  • Carefully cut away any threads or hair entangled in the beater bar, making sure not to damage the bristles.
  • Use a grout brush to scrub off any debris from the beater bar.
  • Wipe the base plate of the vacuum with a dry microfiber cloth.

Finally, use the same microfiber cloth to wipe down the outside of the vacuum. This will help keep the exterior clean and dust-free.
