How to Clean a Himalayan Salt Lamp

Himalayan salt lamps, popular in the eighties, are back in favor. These glowing pink salt blocks now appear everywhere from doctor’s offices to coffee shops, purifying the air for a healthier environment.

While absorbing water and particles, a salt lamp also removes positive ions. When heated, it releases cleansed water vapor and negative ions, boosting lung cilial activity for better cleansing.

If you’ve purchased a Himalayan salt lamp, you might be unsure how to clean it. It’s not always straightforward.

Handle with Care

Purists believe salt lamps shouldn’t be washed because their antibiotic properties naturally cleanse them. If dust accumulates, they suggest using a slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe it away.

Quick Clean Method

More radical salt lamp owners dunk their lamps briefly in cold water to remove dust, then dry them in the sun. The key is quick dunking—not submerging—and using cold water, as salt dissolves if soaked too long.

Keeping It Dry

Salt lamps attract moisture, so avoid placing them in wet areas like bathrooms or outdoors. In high humidity, if your lamp is damp, simply wipe it with a microfibre cloth or turn it on for a few hours to evaporate the moisture.
